The owner of the Galleria, Kollin Malik was responsible for the Ross Street building disaster that made front page of the Cambridge Evening News a few years ago.
While he was attempting to add a basement to a terraced house, one of the several rundown properties he rents out to students, so he could add more rooms to it to let out, he managed to knock the neighbour's wall down in the process!
He is well known to Cambridge's environmental health department and I can only hope that the standards in his restaurant's kitchen are dramatically higher than in his rented properties, but judging by some of the reviews online, who knows...
I worked for kollin malik. He refused to pay me for my last months work. I took him to court and he lost. However 5 years later he still hasn't paid up. I also know people who have rented rooms from him and lost their depossits. Please in the name of justice do not eat in his restaurant. If you do you are supporting a gangster.
I have contacted somebody for a house, this person's name is khalid Malik, I wonder if he's the same person you hate :-) He's got a house to let in Cyprus Road.. Any idea? (I have the feeling he's the same person) Thanks

We need a blog or something warning of how he doesn't protect flat deposits and how we need to mobilise all his tenants (past and present) to take him to court and ruin him into next week - if he doesn't pay, then we can issue a warrant against him to get this done, then send in the bailiffs, and if he still fucks up, hopefully some time.
He can't do this year after year to people. Him and his stupid useless brother (who apparently came to our flat and told my girlfriend that our hot water was hot...when it was infact freezing as my girlfriend then found out by STICKING HER HAND UNDER THE SAME TAP INFRONT OF HIM WHERE HE STILL INSISTED IT WAS HOT!
I am also taking him to court to get my deposit returned. I lived at Cyprus Road in January 2009 and have been defrauded by him. I am a student living entirely on a government fellowship, so his fraud is particularly stinging.
I live in the United States, so most of my case will need to be statements of those who have also been defrauded by him. Any statements you would be willing to give would be helpful. Please contact me.

A Cambridge property owner has been fined for failing to license a house in multiple occupation (HMO).
Mr Khalid Malik, who manages a property in Hemingford Road, pleaded guilty to failing to license the HMO and was fined £2,000. He was also fined a further £1,500 for failing to comply with improvement notices.
The three-storey house that was occupied by up to six unrelated individuals should have been licensed with Cambridge City Council since June 2006.
Housing standards officers gave Mr Malik many opportunities to license the property but despite these attempts he failed to do so. The city council decided that enforcement action was the appropriate course to take.
In October 2008 officers visited the house following complaints from two separate ex-tenants. In addition to the house not having a license, the smoke detectors were found to be hanging off the ceilings, the rear fire escape was blocked from the outside by building material and the rear bathroom roof was in disrepair.
You should email your complaint against him to Selwyn Anderson (Selwyn.Anderson@cambridge.gov.uk) at Cambs Council - he will pursue your issues related to the property (though not your deposit etc.).
One of the people that was sharing the house had the same experience trying to get her deposit back, at first he swore blind that she hadn't paid her rent and wouldn't give it her back (he had taken the rent book the week before and told her she had lost it so couldn't prove it) but eventually he caved in and paid up.

I used to live in one of his dilapidated mud huts on Ross Street about a year ago (you know, the one with the great big pit where the doorstep should be).
Truth be told, when me and my now wife moved in there, it was pretty apparant that this place was a wreck, but as students we were kind of 'used to it', so to speak (I've had a cambridge student rental agency try to rip me off before for my deposit, which they hadn't secured, but that's another story). So, we didn't have any illusions of a penthouse suite: The price was right, so we went with it.
What wasn't right was the lack of hot water, the exposed live wiring from the walls and the CONSTANT excessivley loud music and screaming from his (or his relatives, I wasn't sure, but they definatly had something to do with him) house detatched to ours (their living room was below our bedroom).
What's more, he and these relatives of his would come and go as they pleased, dispite us making clear that we understood it to be a violation of our 'private and sole enjoyment' of the property as outlined in the Tenant's Act. Examples of this include my opening the bathroom door after a shower to find him standing there and coming home from work to find his relatives in our kitchen using the oven to cook food for a party they were having.
We are not pushovers, and things came to a head when we confronted him about all of this, to which he threatened to "slap the shit out of" my wife, telling her that "no woman speaks to him like that".
Prior to this, we had done some digging, and found that our deposit was not secured, so we scarpered with 2 months in unpaid rent (no contract was signed by any party after all) which was about equal to the deposit we had paid. What was clear was that Kolin (or Khalid) was not letting that house legally. Such things as there being no fuse box suggest to me that he has it declaired to Cambridge City Council that nobody lives there and he ciphens electricity from his home next door into the place (I have to hand it to him, I'm surprised he supplies electricity at all). This is why he only advertises with fliers and web ads on sites such as Gumtree- he is probably scared of being caught in an 'official' manner.
So to any students renting for the next academic year in Cambridge (particularly the Romsey Town area) I say this: For pity's sake rent through an agency with an office who just look and feel legitimate- if you have the gut feeling that you are dealing with someone like this, stay away. There are loads of them in Cambridge and yes, they are absurdly expensive, but as a student renting in a City like Cambridge what you are paying for is the security of knowing that you are dealing with a registered organisation who, if the worst comes to it and they try to rip you off, you can at least call the National Tennant's Hotline on!

Housing Standards have the power, if not the will, to shut them down. The more complaints they receive, the more ammunition they have.

My Boyfriend and i rented from Kollin and his daugher inlaw in 2011 for 6 months on Mill Road. The property was not very clean and was extremely run down. the rent was cheap and we were not legally contracted to stay.. this was good for us as we were both on working visas and meant we could leave whenever we wanted. We only heard of this blog from another tenant after we had handed over our cash bond and had lived there for a few months. Peoples comments on here worried me more than we should have! We knew how dodgy it all was.. they guy next door fixed our shower and Kollin spent a lot of time working in our courtyard, but it wasnt that bad! We had lovely tenants sharing at the same time as us, all mostly quiet but nice to live with. We paid our rent on time face to face every month and had the opportunity to speak with Kollin and his daugher inlaw every time! When it was time for us to leave UK, we were worried we would not get our bond back after all of the comments on here. we went to kollins family house to hand over the keys, he provided us with a cheque to refund our bond. Naturally we were worried this would not clear. we were leaving the UK the next day and worried we could not chase him up if it didnt clear. THANKFULLY it cleared within the 7 days and we received our full bond back!
I understand we were 'lucky' compared to others on here.. but we also knew what we were getting into. We looked after our room and house, and kept in polite contact with Kollin. Just wanted to let people know he can be good also!

Housing Standards have the power, if not the will, to shut them down. The more complaints they receive, the more ammunition they have.

My Boyfriend and i rented from Kollin and his daugher inlaw in 2011 for 6 months on Mill Road. The property was not very clean and was extremely run down. the rent was cheap and we were not legally contracted to stay.. this was good for us as we were both on working visas and meant we could leave whenever we wanted. We only heard of this blog from another tenant after we had handed over our cash bond and had lived there for a few months. Peoples comments on here worried me more than we should have! We knew how dodgy it all was.. they guy next door fixed our shower and Kollin spent a lot of time working in our courtyard, but it wasnt that bad!
We had lovely tenants sharing at the same time as us, all mostly quiet but nice to live with. We paid our rent on time face to face every month and had the opportunity to speak with Kollin and his daugher inlaw every time!
When it was time for us to leave UK, we were worried we would not get our bond back after all of the comments on here. we went to kollins family house to hand over the keys, he provided us with a cheque to refund our bond. Naturally we were worried this would not clear. we were leaving the UK the next day and worried we could not chase him up if it didnt clear. THANKFULLY it cleared within the 7 days and we received our full bond back!
I understand we were 'lucky' compared to others on here.. but we also knew what we were getting into. We looked after our room and house, and kept in polite contact with Kollin.
Just wanted to let people know he can be good also!

Hopefully the Private Rented Sector will become regulated and Slum Landlords can no longer get away with this.
They should be sent to prison for their greed and reckless treatment of human lives.
This guy would not care if a tenant died on his property because of his dodgy repairs.
where does this colin bastard live at the present time??? because ive done work for him and hes done a bunk without paying, not answering his phone or anything! so i want to go round there and have words with him
